Yay! I have Power!

20+ hours later, power came on. I then proceded to take stock of the fridge and freezer... then carried five bags of spoiled food to the dumpster. I'm not willing to risk preparing meats that have thawed on the edges or eating frozen food that's in wet boxes. 0.o I really hate my freezer. I think it should've kept things colder for longer.

I DID manage to save milk, bacon, lunch meats, cheese and other important basics with a bag of ice and two coolers. :D

I also now have a flashlight (which Kim will not end up carrying away) and a radio that WORKS. It kept looking stormy today, but right now it's nice and calm. They're still working to restore power to other subdivisions.

I'm now in the 'need donations' area! (It's not good when you intend to save money by eating the freezer food and purchase $30 worth of freezer food on sale the Sunday before and have it go bad. :( Lucky me, freezer was half full prior to that! ) Any little bit would help out right now. You can donate via the donation page! And thank you to those who have! I'll be emailing tomorrow morning, right now I'm trying to play catchup on comic work. :( I'm running on very little sleep right now. I spent most of the night restlessly staring at a constant lightening and thunderstorm ...

Alas!
I so sympathize with your food losses. When our fridge cooked off a few years back, it took with it hours and hours worth of hand-picked wild strawberries, mulberries, and black raspberries.

When my parents decided to buy us a large freezer for Midwinter, I chose a chest freezer that is not self-defrosting. It is a little more work, but a LOT more secure. Since we're using it as a food bank, reliability takes precedence over convenience.

I plan to repeat that mantra when it needs defrosting.

*grin* I've been trying to convince my husband that we can fit a small chest freezer into our apartment. ;) Of course.. when I get a house I'm going to get a nice large one. :D

Get it, and cover it up with a tablecloth when you don't use it. Put some pretty flowers on it and no one's the wiser! There's always a need for more surface/counter space, right? ;)

being the savvy consumer you are I am sure you already know about http://www.couponmom.com as a place to find printable grocery coupons on items you will actually use. I just hope that your able to rebound from losing all that food.

As to the frozen meats your wise to toss it if it defrosts. I worked in a refrigerated warehouse where we had to wear jackets indoors because it was so cold and even at those temps we were only able to allow food to sit on the dock for 6 hrs maximum after coming from a room kept at zero farenheight. Thats about what the average freezer is set at as it allows food to stay frozen and keeps icecream soft but spoilable since it stays frozen at -20F.
